Historic Jonesborough Studies

Graphite and ink study of the depot beside the railroad tracks, with surrounding trees, signs, and trackside details.

Medium: Graphite and ink
Size: 9.5 by 11 inches each
Notes: Completed September 2021. A series of historic Jonesborough place studies focused on architecture, local character, texture, and atmosphere.

This small series of graphite and ink drawings of historic places in Jonesborough, Tennessee was completed in September 2021.

I was interested in the character of these buildings and places: the lines of old wood, the rhythm of windows and rooflines, the contrast between architecture and trees, and the way familiar local landmarks can feel both ordinary and storied at the same time. And I wanted to experiment with using graphite and fineliner pen. The study of the courthouse was completed just in graphite as a comparison.

I like the illustrative quality of the graphite and pen versions, but I’m also fond of the soft realistic quality of the courthouse.
