Medium: Pen and Watercolor
Size: 9.5 by 12 inches
Notes: Completed June 2022. A composition and color study focused on birch trees and extreme watercolor vibrancy.
I think every artist creates a picture of birches at least once in their career, and this is my obligatory contribution to the tradition. It’s pretty obvious why: a birch forest is a fascinating study in composition. The pale vertical trunks, dark bark markings, crossing branches, and bright background shapes give you a lot to work with before the painting has even started making demands.
For this one, though, I also wanted to see how far I could push watercolor toward extreme vibrancy.
I think I succeeded.
