Medium: Oil pastel
Size: 8.5 x 11 inches
Notes: Completed January 23, 2022. Created while studying Picasso, with an emphasis on bold color, divided facial planes, and abstract portrait structure.
I was studying Picasso when I made this piece, and I wanted to play with a face that did not have to behave realistically. The broken planes, mismatched eyes, strong outlines, and bright blocks of color let the portrait become more about shape and character than likeness.
It’s always interesting to borrow another artist’s logic for a little while. The rules change, the face rearranges itself, and suddenly the drawing starts speaking in a different accent.
