This watercolor iris study was completed in May 2024 on cold press Arches watercolor paper.
I wanted to practice the complicated folds and color shifts of irises: the way the petals turn from violet to lavender to reddish purple, the way shadows gather in the ruffled edges, and the way the flower manages to look both delicate and theatrical.
Irises are not shy flowers. They arrive wearing gowns, capes, sleeves, and possibly opinions. This study was a way to slow down and pay attention to those shapes, especially the layered petals and the pale lines that pull the eye inward toward the center of the bloom
